My first initial thought was I didnt really know what was happening in the picture, so I had to ask, but once I found out what it was. Its just shocking to me that in a window store front they would let this be seen by the public. But that was the plan though, they wanted to make jews into a monstrous being, instead of human. I feel like things have changed but the way Trump is going about is time in office we may have another holocaust, hopefully not to this extent but who knows.

Its crazy how much people have changed over the years. We have grown so much, just to possibly throw it all away with the way trump is acting. Hopefully we don't have another holocaust anytime soon or anything close to that.

I fully agree that at first it was confusing when they showed the particular scene. But once we talked about it, I was mind blown about how crazy people can get to put people to shame. Even the location like Curran talked about played into it. The people who put it up knew if they put it in front of a store where everyone goes. But looking through the hallways I can't say I have ever seen anything like this happen, even on tv I have never really seen anything like this.

I completely agree and I think that Trump was a very good example of how racism and stereotyping is still revelent. Trump degrades people because of their race, where they live, and whether they are male or female. If we put someone like that in office than obviously our country still has these issues.

This picture above is truly amazing because it just shows how far people in a certain country are willing to go to propagandize their people. History clearly doesn't change because in today's world just look at North Korea. The same thing is happening in the sense of the propaganda that people are forced to see. There is one difference now because there are people "defecting" from North Korea knowing that the things they see are false. Even in America there is a certain amount of propaganda that the American people see everyday.

I agree Ethan, propaganda is truly a harmful thing to society and should be regulated although it doesn't. It reminds me of the book 1984, we read that book and talk about how everything in that book is bad but we look at today's world and the way we live and there are shocking similarities. Propaganda is leading us to becoming something we have fought against for many years.

I think your post, amongst others, is really interesting because you mention how what was happening during WWII, is still happening today. I never really thought that something this judgemental and prejudice could still occur today, but you example really helps see that it is still happening.

I agree, but for the most part I feel like we have changed otherwise we would have mass murders, hopefully now one takes this the wrong way but instead of only 17 kids dying, the whole school wouldve. Towns would be abliderated, schools would be bombed leaving millions behind. But i do feel as if North Korea is following in Adolfs footsteps but hes too weak for too many countries for him to really be able to anything.

It's crazy how we as humans can do something like this. To not only make fun of jews and others but to post signs declaring that these people do not belong in society is crazy. Religion, which most people today find themselves involved in can drive us to do something that is frowned upon in the workings of the religion. Even today we can advertise against the LGBT community and we can twist religion to try to use that as a way to persuade the public against them and their overall existence in society. We can take religion and manipulate it to get people to follow us through tearing others down who we fear, people who we are scared of we must stoop so low to use religion the way it wasn't intended, as a way to persuade others to follow you through an act of murder and oppressing, which is something that is not highly regarded in the eyes of god. But because they tie god into it, manipulate his words and say its right, then it makes it the right thing to do now.

The connection to current events was pretty spot on. I didn't even think about that in the religious aspect. Other parts of the world literally have religious police, and you can be killed for believing something different. That's basically the same thing that they were doing in Germany, but it hasn't led to anything like a holocaust yet.

I completely agree with the things you said. Your relation between this and the LGBT community was a great example of how racism is still such a large part of our current world. I think our world really hasn't come too far since the Holocaust.

It is very scary to see how people can manipulate a certain religion and get away with it. Does that still happen it today's world? We also do have to be careful because there are now so many groups of people that have different beliefs with everything that they think it true. Will there ever be a day where there is just one religion that everyone agrees on?

I think it's pretty crazy how in Germany there were posters up in shop windows of what a Jewish citizen looked like. At the point the posters were up they didn't start taking the Jewish people away, so it was more of a way to make everyone start being weary of them. It worked well I assume which is pretty messed up. This stuff still happens today, but not nearly as bad. People at school could generalize people by their looks and personality and start making social castes out of that. There will never be an end to that type of judgement though. In our world today, certain races are looked down upon for where they come from or for what few people of that race has done. It's messed up but I don't think it will change for a long time. There will always be people who think their way is the only right way.

After watching this video and looking at the picture, I really don't think that our world has come as far as we think it has since the Holocaust. Racism is still something that plays a major role in our world today. Although we don't go to the extent of wiping out major populations, but there are still many connections today. There's still a lot of work that we have to do in our world to get rid of racism. I think it's really sad that people based whether a person deserves to live or die is simply based of what they look like.

My initial assumptions when I saw this picture is the movie, I was very confused. I couldn't understand how people could degrade people like this. This was horrid to people. People could change their religion, which then people wouldn't be jewish their whole life if they didn't want to. If they could change their religion how would people know who is and isn't jewish?

It is amazing to me that to identify the Jews, are various pictures hanging in windows. The video related about having propaganda about the boy having big lips, just like all of the posters in Schindler's list. Then talking about how observed it is to go off of looks because Jewism is a religion, not how you look or act. Thus being radical assumptions being made out of hatred and indifference.

My thoughts to the Freedom Writers clip are that it was interesting way to teach about the Holocaust. I think, in a way, it made it easier to understand more about the Holocaust. The teacher in Freedom Writers taught the kids that the Germans would print pictures of how to identify a Jew. In the picture of the Jew, he is looking at printed pictures of how someone could identify a Jew. He may or may not be comparing himself to the pictures, seeing if he is classified by the Germans as a Jew. It has to be hard for a Jew to look at those pictures because if one doesn't look like the pictures, is he really Jewish? At the same time, if one does look like the pictures, they could feel that they are in trouble and not like the way they look.

I'm not very surprised at the similarities the teacher in Freedom Writers drew. The problems the Jews were facing weren't much different from what happens today. In fact, the only difference is that these days, it's so much less severe. Besides, those students could have been joking around, which would explain why they were laughing. Teenagers today aren't nearly as serious as the Nazis during the holocaust.

The picture of how to identify a jew from everyone else is sad because it looks like they are exagerating the facial features by a lot to make them look horrible and make everyone hate them even more. There is a jewish race but their is also a jewish religion which everyone hates also. The movie clip from freedom writers is really good and I think that the teacher did a really good job relating it to the holocaust because you could tell that she was really getting through to the students. Rather than just sending them to the office or detention for bullying, she does something that actually changed their mindsets rather than just punishing them

I was thinking the same. With how she explained to the kids about the Holocaust and her reactions I think the kids really saw how real it was. There was many of other African American kids in that classroom but that boy was the only one getting picked on because possibly they didn't know him and they just saw what was on the outside.

I find it interesting that they are labeling people because of what they look like. Someone could look just like that picture and not be jewish or not look like it at all and be jewish. It's actually kind of gross to think about because this still is going on today. Everyone judges a book by its cover even if they don't mean to. It's not something you can control, but you can control how you react to it. Now people usually have their first impression of someone, but then get to know them before completely judging them.

My reactions to the snapshot from Schindler's List is that it's kind of sad how people identify jews the way they do and the way people describe them as. From the way they look. Also that people make all jews the bad guys. I think that in today's society, not always, but a lot of people's faith and religion is questionable to a lot of people. That meaning people get in arguments over religions and certain religions get pointed out and made fun of as if they're the bad guys for believing in what they believe in. The teacher in the Freedom Writers film compared who types of people making it so that the students realized that both races are stereotyped leading up to the Holocaust.

I thought it was bad when the jews were walking down the trail, and the little German kids yelling and throwing snow at them. That is crazy seeing little children grow up to hate a race with a passion. I Never realized how bad the Nazi's treated Jews until seeing it in clips and reading articles. The clip from freedom writers was powerful as well with a big connection in race discrimination.

This propaganda frustrates because your appearance doesn't identify who you are. Having certain features doesn't make you of a certain descent. Thousands of people could've easily been victimized and falsely identified-- which could have led to their murder-- and it upsets me. Same with the video; an exaggerated drawing of a black man which big lips causes hip to get backlash for it. By being laughed at and ridiculed for the image, it sort of resembles the situation that occurred during the holocaust. Not to mention the racism that occurs daily in our society.

I am incredibly saddened by what is going on in the movie right now. The whole situation is so sad and I am almost angered as to how these men are eating great food and partying when these Jewish people are struggling and dying. This reminds me of the current situation in many countries. For example, in Honduras, the president is extremely corrupt and has stayed in power for longer than he was supposed to. While he is living a lavish lifestyle, his people are suffering. I believe that this is the mix of situations that leads to the recipe of possibility of having 2nd class citizens such as Jewish people in WWII times and African Americans. I don't know how this could relate to the United States and current time, but I have heard a lot about how the rate of incarceration among African Americans is more than that of white people. Perhaps, it relates?

In the movie Schindler's List, I find it very interesting how they identify jews. They have signs up to that show if your head is a certain shape your a jew. In the clip that we watched the teacher says how people are identified, like blacks with big lips, or jews with rat noses. In today's society there are still stereotypes that people always say that are among these type of ordeals. Also, stereotypes is a very big thing and is growing we go on.

Looking at the snapshot above shows me that throughout time generations change and people change. That goes with violence and creating history. For what I know is that the germans tried to take over land from the jews in Poland and that wasn't the best choice because then that created war. My feelings towards this discussion is horrific because if this were somewhere from where I stay and just random soldiers try taking over people's land then I would be sick af. When I saw that video clip where there were students in class bullying a student just for how the way he looks is also another similarity that relates to the world war 1 & 2. The reason I say this is because both of these stories have to do with getting rid of the other and I don't tolerate with that either.

The scene posted in the thread from Schindler's List is disgusting. It seems so bizarre that people would actually look at these posters and use them to "identify a jew." Being a part of the Jewish community during that time must have been absolutely terrifying. Something that bothers me a lot about all of this is that some people are identified as Jewish by association and just as their religion. Sometimes I think about if this were to happen to Catholics. I am catholic and come from a catholic family and I know it would be really hard for me to keep my faith in God and have hope. It is truly inspiring to see what these people have endured.

When I saw this I thought it was crazy that people would listen to just a picture. I saw thought it was crazy if that's the person they were looking for what about the jews that did not look like that. Watching the video I was surprised you never think about stuff like that something that was a joke could turn in to so much more. It gives you a whole new perspective on how something can get blown up and turn in to such a big event. I believe that today people have started to come more together and there is less segregation, i'm not saying it doesn't happen but its better. For example hurricane Irma destroyed tons of families homes but people of all different race went to help.

I believe one of the leading problems of the Holocaust was all the bystanders. I noticed in the video of the "Freedom Writers", all the kids were laughing at this one boy, not one person stood up for him besides the teacher. In Schindler's list, as Jews were on the march to the ghettos, people on the sides of the roads were laughing, throwing things at them, and yelling bad names at them. These are bystanders, and this is still an active problem in my society. Bullying is a prime example of this; to this day, it saddens me that people still don't step in to make a change, and how people form judgments about peoples physical appearance so quickly (the pictures of "how to identify a jew" relate to this). I think the upcoming "March For Our Lives" and changing our schools safety is a small step in testing if history has changed from the past. Will people intervene and come together to make a difference or will history repeat itself again?

It is sad to see how Nazi's discriminated against the Jews in the picture, labeling all of them as having messed up features. This connects to Ernst Hiemer's short story How to Identify a Jew. The children in the classroom all use different derogatory terms to describe all of a Jew's bad features. This story also directly connects to the clip from Freedom Writers. In the clip from Freedom Writers, the kids are laughing at a picture of a black student in their class, with the drawing having big lips and other bad features. However, the teacher in Freedom Writers reacts negatively and scolds the students, while the teacher in How to Identify a Jew positively reinforces the student behavior. I think while the events that happen in Freedom Writers and How to Identify a Jew are more rare in our current society, racism in this form still exists.

With posters posted on a wall describing what jews look like is awful, I think that there isn't a certain look that jews have because there isn't a certain look to jews. Just because there is a jewish race and religion there isn't really a way to tell that they are jewish. The SS officers didn't ask before they took you, it just depended on whether you looked like the poster or not. They just assumed that you were a Jew.

Whenever I see the posters of the drawings of the jews, I feel that that's disrespectful. There judging how they look and those posters help you spot a jew. Everyone should be treated equal. I saw the whole movie of "Freedom Writers" and the teacher did amazing things to help those high school kids succeed in school. Whenever I saw that scene I felt bad for the kid that got the drawing because they were making fun of him and how he looked, and the whole classroom was laughing. In today's society I feel like things still haven't changed .A lot of specific people are getting killed and hurt.

Even though it's wrong there are small hate group who still think that they are the top race. But maybe someday this will end. From the picture, I guess the first thing I thought was why. I didn't really understand it. Why do we pick from what people look like and say they are a Jew? They see them with a prominent nose and dark curly hair. I found a article about how someone was talking about how he looks and how others look different. "Yes, there are lots of Jews who look like me, or Jewish men who look like like Woody Allen, But there are also many Jews who don't." I think that this will always be a problem in society. People will always pick at it and there will always be stereotypes. I do believe that it has improved. I really do hate this topic. Based on what you look like, I don't think you should be thrown in a group of people.
